Enrico Marinelli Art Award

In memory of the extraordinary contribution of Enrico Marinelli, creator of the Guild of the Dome, Opera del Duomo starts an international competition among contemporary artists close to the spirit which animated the great past masters whose works adorn the Florentine monuments and fill the Cathedral Museum.

THEMES OF THE CONTEST

Expressing universal human values, encouraging artists of whatever cultural, religious or philosophical background to explore the great themes of the human spirit, in one or another of the languages that today speak to women and men around the world, artists will be called to perform at their best by proposing their works on the footsteps of great masters of the past, like Michelangelo, Ghiberti and Brunelleschi, thus becoming part of a new era of contemporary art for the future of the Opera del Duomo.

WINNER AND AWARD
The winning emerging artist will receive a prize in money equal to € 20.000,00 to be utilized for the realization in full size of his sculpture.
The sculpture will then be exhibited for a period of minimum 6, maximum 12 months in a highly visible location inside the premises of the museum, becoming part of a prospective project for a new collection of contemporary art for the Grand Museum of the Opera del Duomo.

HOW TO PARTECIPATE
Contact:

In memory of the extraordinary contribution of Enrico Marinelli, creator of the Guild of the Dome, Eurovita has generously made available resources for an international competition among contemporary artists close to the spirit which animated the great past masters whose works adorn the Florentine monuments and fill the Cathedral Museum.

Artists will be asked to propose works in the spirit of the monumental sculpture and painting for which Florence is famous, but in a contemporary style, expressing the universal human values which are at the heart of the Cathedral’s heritage of sacred sculpture and painting.

Young, talented and emerging artists will be identified and invited to participate to the the first edition of this award.

The members of the Guild of the Dome will indicate to the organizers one or more experts in contemporary art – critics, scholars, museum curators or gallery directors – who will then suggest the names of artists able and willing to take part to the call.

The objective is not to reproduce the masterpieces of the Renaissance and of the Christian faith for which the Opera del Duomo complex and museum are renowned, but to encourage artists of whatever cultural, religious or philosophical background to explore the great themes of the human spirit, in one or another of the languages of art that today speak to women and men around the world.

The works produced for the competition will be the property of the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, which intends to exhibit them permanently in one of the monuments of Cathedral Square, where the millions of annual visitors to the complex can see them.
